Black History Month
This month we have been contemplating Black History Month. That also got us thinking about people who have had to overcome the additional challenge of a disability. There are a couple well known Historical Black figures with disabilities, Harriet Tubman Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and Muhammed Ali; that about ended our list. Google came to the rescue and we learned about many other African Americans with disabilities. We came across, Whoopi Goldberg, Will Smith, Hallie Berry, Danny Glover, Teddy Pendergrass, and the list can go on. That got us to thinking.
Windy City Plates is not just a business to us, it’s a statement to the world. People with disabilities can do anything, be anything. Why were these great roles models not well known for overcoming racial barriers and physical barriers? Wouldn’t it be great if people could be even more inspired by these incredible individuals? We would like to encourage more people with disabilities to stand up and show themselves, show that having a disability is just a different kind of normal. Maybe, if we’re really lucky, we’ll have the chance to inspire someone else to achieve greatness.
